Landscape management is a profession dedicated to planning and implementing the care of landscapes of almost any type. It is a strand of landscape architecture and is a complex, multi-disciplinary subject. Blimey, that sounds a bit dull...
It's about looking after the green, blue, brown and grey bits that are generally found outside.
There are four main strands:
Amenity landscape management - parks, gardens, schools - any land that has a use or value to the public
Conservation/habitat management - increasing biodiversity, protecting species and ther habitats
Environmental management - land reclamation, waste treatment, motorway embankments etc. Big stuff.
Agriculture - farm diversification, wildlife initiatives, sustainable practices
So who manages landscapes?
Landscape managers. But that's probably not why you're here. You are probably one of the thousands of people who have responsibility for a landscape but little ofr no background in landscape management or any of its related disciplines; horticulture, arboriculture, turf etc. So as far as this is concerned, you do. You might, at some point, decide that you need a bit of help from a landscape manager.
A professional landscape manager usually has a degree or post-graduate degree in landscape management of some sort i.e. amenity management, landscape ecology, amenity horticulture or just plain landscape management. They will have extensive knowledge of a range of landscape types, management plans and maintenance schedules. Don't expect them to come and dig anything up - they have sub-contractors for that kind of thing...
